The central nervous system (CNS) is protected by the blood brain barrier (BBB) and lacks a lymphatic system. Until recently, the process by which the CNS cleared waste products remained unclear. Several conditions have been associated with accumulation of pathologic byproducts, such as beta amyloid and tau in Alzheimer's disease. Other conditions have been associated with acute inflammatory responses, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury. Many of these conditions have been associated with decreased clearance of pathologic elements, which has renewed interest in understanding how the body filters and removes unhealthy elements from the brain parenchyma. Over the last few decades, researchers have identified a unique system, existing only within the CNS, that provides a pathway for clearance of fluid and substances from within the brain parenchyma to the peripheral lymphatic system external to the CNS. This system is a hybrid cooperation of glial cells and the vasculature of the brain. The astrocytic end feet envelop intracranial blood vessels creating a perivascular space, which serves as a conduit for fluid and substance exchange between the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), interstitial fluid (ISF) and the brain parenchyma. This network is called the glial-lymphatic or glymphatic system and its role in brain health and disease is an area of increasing understanding.

This course will:
- Review the components of the BBB, glymphatic system (glial cells, intracranial vasculature) as well as the elements depending upon the system (brain parenchyma, CSF, ISF) and the role each plays in health and disease
- Explore the primary glymphatic drainage pathways from specific brain parenchyma to extracranial lymphatics
- Identify potential pathways associated with specific disease processes (Alzheimer's, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's, stroke, and others)
- Learn and apply a unique osteopathic manipulative technique with the glymphatic structures, to optimize glymphatic system structure and function
